How do you use a manhole hook?

Do I need a single hook or a pair?
It depends on the cover. A lid with one keyhole takes a single hook; a cover with two pick holes is easier and safer to lift with a matching pair of manhole cover hooks, sharing the load across both hands.

Are heavy-duty hooks needed for D400 covers?
For heavy ductile-iron D400 road covers, yes — a heavy-duty manhole hook uses a thicker, longer forged bar that won’t bend under the load. Lighter composite covers at the same class can usually be opened with a standard hook.
